What is the Lakeside for Christ mission and vision?
Lakeside builds courageous and strong followers of Christ, equipping them to advance the gospel.
Proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and ministering to those who minister to others, Lakeside will serve as a preeminent center for Christian discipleship, education, worship, and fellowship through camps, retreats, leadership development, and youth & family programs.
How has God impacted the lives of children, families, and churches at Lakeside?
For over 40 years, Lakeside has proclaimed and advanced the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is a place where God has transformed the lives of thousands of children, adults, and families.
During 2018 and 2019 alone, over 900 people committed their lives to Christ and 148 were baptized. In 2019, a record 5,400 people attended camps and church retreats at Lakeside. It is evident that God’s work at Lakeside has been thriving both spiritually and financially.
Notably, over 50 percent of camp and retreat guests represent culturally diverse churches, including Brazilian, Hispanic, and African American. Lakeside is the retreat center of choice for these churches because guests feel safe, respected, and loved as brothers and sisters in Christ.
Today, more than ever, children, families, and churches need places like Lakeside where they can hear and experience the richness of God’s truth and love. So many of us have personally seen and experienced God’s work at Lakeside as campers, summer staff, or retreat attendees; and we know that Lakeside must continue as a Christian ministry.
Is Lakeside financially stable?
Yes! Lakeside, by God’s grace, has grown over the past 10 years into a financially stable, debt free, and operationally self-sustaining ministry. In fact, Lakeside has consistently posted modest profits for the past several years.
As a seasonal operation, Lakeside receives most of its income during late spring, summer, and early fall. This income sees the ministry through the winter months. As of March 31, 2020, other than for the Corona virus shut down, Lakeside was on track for another profitable year.
Lakeside established and maintained an accountability system, with finances reviewed quarterly by the board and district trustees, and annually by an independent Certified Public Accountant. Additionally, Lakeside was accredited in 2018 by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA).
Is Lakeside at risk of losing tax exempt status?
Not at all. Lakeside functions exclusively as a religious non-profit organization and serves only Christian churches, ministries, and other 501(c)3 non-profit organizations. Based on legal opinions, current regulations, and case law it is highly unlikely that Lakeside would lose its tax-exempt status.
Camps that have had their non-profit status challenged were thought to be serving or participating in for-profit activities.
Are Converge Trustees permitted by law to sell the Lakeside property at below market value?
Absolutely! According to two separate legal opinions, Converge Northeast is in fact within its rights to gift or sell Lakeside below the market value to another “like-minded” non-profit organization.
According to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office, Converge Northeast “may determine that it is appropriate to transfer a large part of its assets to another charity in exchange for consideration that is less than fair market value. Click here to see for yourself.
How is Lakeside prepared to address the current health crises?
Lakeside for Christ has formed a team of health care and camp ministry professionals to closely follow developments. Lakeside ministry will only resume when it can be done so safely and effectively.
We are regularly checking updates from the Center for Disease Control, the Christian Camp & Conference Association, the American Camp Association, and the Massachusetts Department of Health. Additionally, we are tracking the effectiveness of safeguards used by schools, restaurants and hotels to protect students, guests and employees.
Presently, we are maintaining a conservative “wait-and-see” approach, while watching for proven best practices.
